Genital Herpes Treatment
There's no cure for genital herpes. However, genital herpes treatment includes oral prescription antiviral medications, including acyclovir (Zovirax), famciclovir (Famvir) and valacyclovir (Valtrex), to help heal the sores sooner and reduce the frequency of relapses. If taken daily, these medications may also reduce the chance you'll infect your partner with the herpes virus.
Self-Care at Home
- Avoid excessive heat or sunlight, which makes the irritation more uncomfortable.
- Do not use perfumed or antibacterial soaps, feminine deodorant, or douches.
- Wear more comfortable, loose cotton clothing.
- For pain, you may take aspirin, acetaminophen (Tylenol), or ibuprofen (Advil).
- Cool cloths on the affected area may soothe the pain.
The first and only once-daily Valtrex
has been proven to stop or reduce a recurrent genital herpes outbreak. Valtrex can also be used suppressively to treat genital herpes. Talk with your doctor about which method of genital herpes treatment is most appropriate for you.
